Cultural Dimension Comparison Essay Canada and Japan
Haru Yamaguchi
Canada and Japan have big different cultures. The two countries have cultural contrast in terms of Indulgence, uncertainty avoidance, and masculinity. Therefore, they show their differences between both cultures.
Firstly, Japan has higher uncertainty avoidance than Canada. It shows Japanese culture dislike new things like foreigners, changing rules, and so on. Especially elder people don’t like changing something. Because They tend to fear change because they are unfamiliar with new things. However Canadian people is more flexible than Japan. Canada’s culture is a multi-ethnic one, shaped and constantly changing. Also, Canadian society have diversity and have many immigrants thus they used to face new things.
Secondly, Canada has higher indulgence than Japan. The reason why Canadian people think it’s important to keep balance between daily life and working. So, they can separate times like family time, free time, and working time. Also, they can show their emotions more and they have strong opinions. Some examples like a street performance aspect in Canada and they enjoy this moment. But Japanese people consider that work is important so it’s more strict than Canadian society. Japanese people often pay attention to others, so Japan has many rules in public. Because of things we don’t feel freedom and more stressful. Thus, its show big difference how to spend their time for good life.
Thirdly Japan has huge difference about masculinity among Canada. Japan is high level masculinity because there no equality men and woman. Man can get more money for salary than woman in Japan. And man, still have power in the society more than woman. Also, Japan is not similar to LGBTQ. However Canadian people are more flexible about gender. They recognize gender problems accurately like a LGBTQ. Also, their society is more sociable.
In all Canada and Japan have a deafferent culture and society. Canada is a flexible country, and unlike Japan, it is a collection of many different cultures. As a result, there is more freedom and people are more open-minded than in Japan. Therefore, it is normal for people to be highly adaptable to change and accept new things. On the other hand, Japan tends to be more strict and collective than Canada. Japan is not accustomed to change, as its culture is mainly unique to Japan. Japan is a masculine society, and people are not able to balance work and daily life. I think this is the biggest difference between Japan and Canada. And Canada, which is a multi-ethnic country, is opposite to Japan and has little in common culturally.
